出生于山西晋中的演奏家郭雅志,孩提时期曾学吹圆号,又在地方艺校、剧团打下艺术基础,精熟唢吶、二股弦等演奏技艺。随后,郭雅志入读中央音乐学院,师从名家无数,又获聘为香港中乐团唢吶首席。即便名衔获奖不胜枚举,郭雅志仍未就此伫足,远赴波士顿伯克利音乐学院(Berklee College of Music)深造,不懈于教学、发明、创作,并充分发挥北方汉子性格,甚有胆识地接触各式风格、多元类型的音乐表现。

波士顿北部的小城市──梅休因(Methuen)。那里,有一座看似不大起眼的小音乐厅,却承载着风靡一时的传奇:1863年,由德国瓦尔克公司(E.F. Walcker Company)打造的一架管风琴运抵美国,被安装在波士顿音乐厅。这组庞然大物,有6088根音管及84支音栓,既是美国第一台专业演奏级管风琴,也是当时全美最大的管风琴。但是,随着波士顿交响乐团成立,需要更大的表演空间,且聆听管风琴音乐的观众减少,波士顿音乐厅扩建乐池时,便把整组管风琴拆卸下来,收进仓库封存。几经易手,终于在1909年建造「梅休因纪念音乐厅」(Methuen Memorial Music Hall)安置,使它发挥余热。这座音乐厅,巧合地成为瑞鸣携手各地音乐家,认识世界的一处绿州,永不褪色的古董,犹如见亲人般地敞开胸怀,迎接着远道而来的宾客,扩散纹丝未减的神气,与郭雅志的唢吶吹奏,共筑起串接各地的音乐桥梁。

Above, a wisp of clouds blankets the moon.
A traveler, never forgetting his purpose, continues toward the distance. If he truly wishes to witness this distant land, the only way to do so is walk there. After climbing to a high point, the sound of his trumpet echoes across the mountains and waters, stretching toward the horizon. The traveler’s gaze traces the face of the land. Autumn’s bounty is soon to be harvested, that blissful time of year when the first frost still seems far away.
Renowned music producer Ye Yunchuan brings you this innovative compilation featuring distinctive cultural production, inviting Mr. Yazhi Guo and a team of top-class instrumentalists and composers, who have collaborated to create this novel revisiting of classic world music. Yazhi Guo was born in Jinzhong, Shanxi. In his youth he studied the French horn, and after building a foundation in local art schools and performance troupes, he developed a firm knowledge of instruments like the suona and erguxian. Later he entered China Central Conservatory of Music, where he learned under the tutelage of a host of renowned artists, and was granted the position of chief suona artist in the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He then went on to receive a myriad of awards, but he didn’t stop there: he traveled to Boston to continue his studies at Berklee College of Music, continuously learning, creating, innovating and exhibiting to the world the unique persona of the northern Chinese, while boldly experimenting with various forms and styles of musical expression.
On this album, we get the first chance to experience the amalgamation of Yazhi Guo’s multicultural vision, as well as the achievements of his long and eventful artistic career, enjoying a glimpse at his daring yet refined musical style. Folk melodies from throughout the world, in their purest form, are beautiful in their rustic simplicity, and deserve the adoration they have received for so many years. The unrestrained expression of different peoples, subtly colored with jazz elements, become all the more stunning, without losing their original charm. Gospel music combined with suona, hulusi and pipe organ music tears down cultural barriers, resulting in a classic ode to music of the human race. Meticulous and ingenious arrangement, along with moving performances by Yazhi Guo, known as “Asia’s greatest suona player”, synergize to make this seldom heard instrument feel like a long lost friend. Once music is infused with one’s soul, its rich, finely-aged qualities and inspiring renditions of life are sure to captivate countless listeners.
As if this exotic place were his own homeland, the traveler sets foot in the majestic hall, gazing with reverence at the enormous pipes of the organ as they scale the wall toward the lofty ceiling. This is an instrument designed to sing the praises of God, and fills the air with His holy decree. The suona, hailing from the distant Yellow Plains of China, crosses path with the pipe organ for the first time in music history, resulting in a serendipitous effect much like returning to one’s hometown to come across a stranger who seems strangely familiar. Such an exchange may result in a spark among souls, which in turn may lead to profound dialogues.
Rhymoi Music producer Ye Yunchuan traversed the Pacific, to arrive at the small town of Methuen, just north of Boston. There, a seemingly insignificant music hall is home to a remarkable story: in 1863, EF Walcker Company of Germany created the first pipe organ to be shipped to the US, upon which it was to be installed at Boston Symphony Hall. The massive collection of parts consisted of 6088 pipes and 84 organ stops, making it the first professional performance organ pipe in the country at the time. However, with the later establishment of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, there was a need for larger performance space, and as the number of pipe organ audiences diminished and the orchestra pit of Boston Symphony Hall expanded, the organ was eventually disassembled and placed in storage. After several changes of hands, the organ was finally purchased by a local gentry, and installed at Methuen Memorial Music Hall in 1909, where it was given a second life. For this album, this hall became an oasis where Rhymoi came together with artists from around the world, welcoming each of these guests from afar with open arms as if they were family. This quaintly antique hall, in its eternal glory, became a bridge connecting Yazhi Guo’s suona with myriad music from around the world.
The East and the West reach the same destination by different means, in a vast world where no two patches of earth are the same. The music we create reflects our hopes and desires, and throughout our endless travels, sometimes, in the blink of an eye, all becomes clear.

顽强不绝的低音,与西域琵琶的前身乌德琴(Oud),拉开了人们神往西亚地貌的帷幕。渐渐地,隐约出现唢吶一段自由的序奏,越来越近,速写着伊斯坦堡的天空,在我们耳边泼洒出神秘色彩。来自秘鲁的木箱鼓(Cajon),替代了土耳其Dumbek的音色,不厌其烦地敲打出激情动感的七拍舞蹈形态,似乎是当地的人们围在身旁,对我们展开热情邀约、共同享乐!爵士风格埋伏其中,古老的马卡姆(Maqam)穿插再现,一场横跨古今、交贯东西的盛大派对,就此启动。高潮处嘎然而止,是否大梦刚醒?才发现,那是无法忘却的远方情意。
This song opens with a tenacious bass rhythm, along with the sound of the oud, the predecessor of the pipa from China’s western region, sweeping the listener off to West Asia. A freestyle suona intro gradually picks up, and draws gradually more intense, offering a sketch of the sky above Istanbul, treating our ears with its mysterious attributes. The cajon, a box drum originally from Peru, replaces the Turkish dumbek sound, going to great lengths to create a passionate offbeat dance rhythm for us, so that we feel as if we are surrounded by locals who have invited us to dance and enjoy the festivities with them. Featuring subtle jazz elements, with surprising ancient maqam melodies interspersed throughout, a party spanning continents and eras has begun. The song comes to an end right at the climax, making us wonder if it was all just a dream. But then it becomes clear that such a friendly welcome could only have been real.


2、奇异恩典 (Amazing Grace)

这首自苏格兰传唱出来,现已是全球著名的基督福音歌曲,早已跨越宗教藩篱,成为许多人的精神寄托。葫芦丝攸攸地奏出它美好的旋律,毫不令人感到意外、突兀,那像是旅客来到异乡,被教堂内的彩色玻璃所吸引,见到光线从中照射进来时,内心由衷而生的敬畏。小小唢吶声拔地而起,发出如风笛似的音响,暗示着灵魂在茫茫大海中,准备停泊,投入港口的怀抱,有所依靠。巨大的管风琴始终支撑着音乐的延展,像圣水似地包裹住东方管乐的歌唱,彼此难分难舍,它们都是为了同一个目的──天地人的对话。
This song, originating from Scotland, has now become a gospel ballad throughout the world, surpassing the realm of religion, and acting as a prayer of hope for countless people. The hulusi offers its achingly beautiful melody, feeling not misplaced or sudden at all, rather giving one the sensation of a visitor from afar. A visitor, enraptured by the stained glass windows, and upon seeing the light reflected through them, is overcome by a sense of deep awe and veneration. A sprightly suona tune picks up, creating a sound much like a bagpipe, signaling the souls of the boundless seas to prepare for landing, so that they may disembark and find their ways into the embraces of their loved ones. The enormous pipe organ keeps a watchful eye over the procession of the music, enveloping the sound of the eastern wind as if steeping it in holy water. By the end the two are reluctant to part ways, as both have the same goal: an exchange between Heaven and Earth.

We step into a Jewish home, and must keep our voices down, as the mother is putting her child to sleep, offering her evening blessings to him. This song expresses the mother’s wish for her son to become a tradesman in the future, travelling the land dealing in raisins and almonds, so that he may amass wealth while also seeing the world. Sometimes the sense of tranquility is the simplest form of happiness; sometimes the soft arc of a rainbow can give rise to the most indomitable will. As the lullaby draws to an end, a few strong notes are stuck, but not to show the child’s surprise or tears; it is simply the mother checking to make sure that her child has fallen asleep with the sense of love in his heart.


4、兰花花 (Blue Flowers)

苍凉有劲的管子声,摊出一片晋陕大地的黄土,饱涵着窗棂之内的哀怨、无奈、泣诉与可怜。筝声如流水汩汩而出,缓缓地推开一卷尘封许久的画轴,暗藏着一段女子不幸的传奇故事。慢吟浅唱,像她姗姗的步伐,兴许是回忆过去,也或是为接下来的未知遭遇而愁容担忧。来不及多思考一点儿,紧张的声音传来,再多抵抗终成枉然,徒劳无功一场,只得藉由歌声抒情。但这段信天游唱不尽的,是兰花花心中无法忘怀的那位情哥哥……
The powerfully melancholic cry of the guanzi takes us to the yellow plains of Shanxi and Shaanxi, acting as a window for us to bear witness to grievance, desperation, accusation, and sympathy. The song of the guzheng flows like an endless stream, slowly unrolling a painting scroll that has not seen the light of day for many years, which tells us the story of a very unfortunate woman. Long, drawn-out vocals offer an image of her hesitant footsteps, as she perhaps ponders on the past, or possibly on her uncertainties of the future. Before she has time to complete her thoughts, the music intensifies; any effort she makes to resist will be in vain, and all she can do is express herself through the music. But what this “xintianyou” (a folk style originating from Shaanxi) leaves to our imagination is the origin of the young man that Lan Huahua holds so dear in her heart.

电吉他百变出奇,一时使人摸不着头绪、眼神迷离,时像古琴、扬琴,也如犹遮半面的琵琶。登上一层境界,竟发现脆朗的竹笛,哼起早年流传至今,那小尼姑思凡的禁忌故事,又回忆出阮籍「叹道之不行」的种种感慨。慢慢地,眼神模糊,音调跑了,节奏走了,如满杯一干而尽,脑袋晃荡,又能露出齿颊浅笑。乱中又见秩序,淡淡地爵士印象,若有似离,细微的变化,有如佳酿醇厚,余韵无穷。
The ever-changing sound of the electric guitar leaves one feeling somewhat disoriented and unable to find their bearings, at times sounding like a guqin or yangqin, at others like a pipa. Going another layer deeper, we discover the crisp sound of the bamboo flute, singing its timeless song of a young Buddhist nun who dared to think of worldly pleasures, while invoking images of fervent poetry. Gradually the music becomes blurred, the sounds intermingling, the rhythm losing order, as if the night’s wine has finally gone to one’s head, and all one can do is sit back and enjoy the dulling sensation. Eventually chaos forms back into coherency, and the jazzy undertones seem to have undergone a slight transformation, leaving the listener with a lingering taste on the palate.

传承自民间老艺人的大唢吶,高亢中透露着一丝凄凉,好像在千里冰封大地上,费尽心思觅回一抔黑土。「感于哀乐,缘事而发。」音乐自冷清的地表发酵蕴酿,渐成委婉细腻的山歌小调,悄悄地诉说流传已久的故事。彷佛记忆有些模糊,怎么说也不大清楚,但却距离耳际十分靠近,几乎就要戳近心坎中。随着节奏紧迫,步伐自荒烟蔓草转入城镇野台,纯真的嗓音伴着人群唱跳,五花的手帕转开了整座世界。一来一往、一问一答,不仅是一次次天真的狂欢,而是人们对于美好生活的冀盼。
The great suona, a larger version of the instrument, finetuned through many generations of folk artists, wails a tune full of melancholy, as if searching for a shred of soil amid hundreds of miles of tundra. Propelled by the heart, we do what drives us. The music then transgresses from somber to a more delicate and refined mountain song, whispering the truth behind an age-old tale. While the memories of it are quite blurred and cannot be related succinctly, they are just within range of recollection, and about to pierce right through the heart. As the rhythm intensifies, the footsteps cease treading on barren weed-wrought grasslands, and find themselves instead on a small-town stage, where a sincere voice leads the dancers on, and the five-pointed handkerchiefs spin as if with the force of the world itself. Back and forth, asking and responding; not only is this celebration in its purest form, it is the epitome of passion for life.

阳光洒在草坪上,温暖且柔软,给人干静舒适的祥和气息。回首望去,是记忆中的哪位青年或少女,陷入令人向往的青涩恋情中?笛声阵阵,脑海里总是充满温馨,只有对未来有无穷美好想象,缭绕不止、源源不绝……好似人称百灵的云雀,羽色虽然平淡无奇,但是飞行姿态优美,鸣声动听,可爱而惹人喜欢,当牠凌空飞翔时,往往不吝啬地纵情引吭高歌,笛子与吉他,仿佛云雀的动人歌声,传递出这世界上最绚丽的繁华似锦。
Sunlight spills across the lush grass, filling it with its warmth, creating a serene and lavish environment. Looking back, how was it that one fell into such fervent love? As the bamboo flute chimes in, fond memories follow in a flood, bringing with them a steady rush of dreams for the future. The lark, or skylark, is rather plain in appearance but very graceful in flight, and has a pleasant call. As it soars through the sky it sings to the world below, while the bamboo flute and guitar mimic its song, bringing their own share of joy to the world.

一对热恋中的青年、少女,随着吉他相佐的舞步,走走停停,珍惜着彼此相处的时光,小提琴直白爽朗的吟唱,藏不住这对情侣的心思。管子恰到好处地反客为主,以沙哑富磁性的嗓音,试图把这美好的一刻传播给更多人知晓,让他们的爱情永远不减。乐声渐弱,像是青年对少女低语:「我宁可卖去靴子,在街上漫步,只要是与你在一起。」少女更是害羞地回答:「没有你,我什么也不是,就像精美的大门缺了一个把手。」两人慢慢、慢慢地,携手远去。
A young couple, deep in love, stroll down the street together, walking to the rhythm of the guitar. They stop intermittently, for no reason other than to enjoy their time together, while the violin makes a frank statement of the unconcealable feelings that they have for each other. The guanzi then turns the table, attempting, with its rough, husky sound, to inform the passersby of this glorious moment, so that they may bear witness the eternal vitality of love. The music drops to a whisper, as if the young man tells the young woman, “I’d walk up and down the streets, selling boots, if it meant I could be with you.” To this the young woman shyly responds, “Without you, I’m nothing, just like an ornate gate without a handle.” The two, hand in hand, ever so slowly, recede into the night.


9、印地安往事(Song of the Indians)

海风推送着船帆,眼前那端是神秘的美洲大陆。印第安笛高亢的声音,神似印地安人的欢呼叫喊,一阵阵地重复着几遍,开展彼此的第一次接触。音乐转为沉稳,来自远方的冒险者们,看到肥美的平原上,一片片地玉米、烟草、可可……那是印地安人们用身体劳动,将上天赏赐的瑰宝,转化而来的丰隆物产。那问答一般的高亢曲调再度响起,方才所见的奇幻境遇,究竟是真或梦呢?不得而知。但一段印地安小调,却深深烙在脑海之中。
The ocean wind propels the sails of the ship as it races toward the mysterious shores of the Americas. The lofty sound of the hulusi could be the cheers of the Indians, recounting time and time again the sensation created the first time that the two peoples meet. The music then subsides, as the explorers from a faraway realm first bear eyes on the lush, verdant soils, the endless fields of corn, tobacco and cocoa. These are the fruits of the Indian people’s toils and labors, through which they have transformed the gifts of nature into something even more incredible. The resounding song, that is so much like a dialogue, commences again, spiriting one away to a land of dreamlike beauty…or is it really all just a dream? It’s hard to tell the difference. But no matter the case, the song of the Indian people cannot be forgotten.

管子一枝独秀,唱出蒙古族的长调。在广袤的大草原上,鸿雁飞过,往遥远的南方而去,恰似闺女出嫁,即将离别熟悉的家。告辞父母,即将上路远行,大提琴模仿出马头琴的声音,那似乎是父母对新娘的最后一番祝福,并告诫不可再留有过往的习气,要好好的与丈夫组织家庭。鼓声咽咽,送亲队伍启程,马匹驮着新娘,在亲家的拥护下,直驱向前。父母之命言犹在耳,甚至忆起家中醉人的奶茶,与草场的花香……思亲之情,只好随歌声穿透白云,希望能飘回家中,聊表女儿的深情挂念。
On this track, the guanzi singlehandedly performs a Mongolian urtiin duu, or “long drawn song”. Across the vast open plains, swan geese soar through the sky, seeking the distant southern lands, like a young bride leaving the home where she grew up as she heads toward a new life. She says goodbye to her parents, and begins her long trek. The cello mimics the sound of a horsehead fiddle, embodying the final well wishes of parents toward their newly wed daughter, telling her that she must put aside all her bad habits, and become a new part of her husband’s family. The drums rumble on, and the caravan departs. The horse stoically pulls the cart forward, gradually transporting the bride and her new family to what will now be her home. Her own parents’ admonishments are still fresh in her ears, and all she can think of are the intoxicating aromas of her family’s milk tea and the flowers on the plains. Her longing for her family can only be expressed in song, her voice reaching toward the clouds, and hopefully drifting back home, to bring her parents word of how much she loves them.

Little by little, the fluid, mellow sound of the guzheng flows into the Mediterranean Sea. In this peninsular nation rich with legendry, a distant and mysterious melody from the Middle East floats alongside the song of the taodi, the two not clashing at all, instead having quite a harmonious effect. Some say that the lady is from Central Asia, while others say she is from Egypt. Her grace and beauty, along with her delicate dance steps, leave others with an impression not to be forgotten, but before long she is gone like a flickering shadow. Sometimes when there is music playing, people say they caught a glimpse of her. Their memories of her will be around much longer than she usually is.

A 19th century explorer, following the banks of the Mississippi, pioneers new lands, and takes part in business and construction, eventually amassing a considerable amount of wealth, and seeks to take the New World by storm. His will is embodied in the powerful sound of the pipe organ, as it rolls like thunder. A Caucasian man arrives in the Americas, and is captivated by the sight of a young Indian girl, whom he can never keep out of his thoughts, and wishes only to be with for the rest of his days. Such tender yet powerful emotions are difficult to describe with words, but the deep sound of the guanzi manages to eloquently portray this feeling of undying love. Amidst the graceful melody, the man’s iron will is finally swayed, and just as the rumble of the pipe organ is picking up momentum, it suddenly transforms into an ode to the eternal strength of love.

郭雅志,1966年生于山西。他是唢吶及多种管乐器的演奏家,活跃于国际舞台上,有「唢吶第一吹」的美称。
1990年毕业于中央音乐学院,后留校任教。1999年任香港中乐团唢吶首席,并任教于香港演艺学院,为香港唢吶协会首任会长。2012年,赴美国波士顿伯克利音乐学院深造爵士乐,2015年获艺术家文凭,2016年率领伯克利学院的即兴乐队 Planet Micro Jam Institute 出访中国,致力于中美文化交流。
郭氏发明唢吶「活芯」 获文化部颁发「科技进步二等奖」,令传统唢吶在转换所有调式及临时变化音的演奏上有了重大突破。 1998年郭氏在美国纽约卡内基大厅历史性地荣获 Pro Musicis 国际大奖,美国《侨报》形容「为中国民族管乐走向世界迈出了重要的一步」。同年7月获选中国最杰出的音乐家之一,并在欢迎美国总统克林顿首次访华之音乐会上演出,倍受称赞。 2013年,郭氏荣获「香港年度 2012 最佳艺术家奖(音乐)」及美国孔子学院颁发的「中国文化传播贡献奖」。 2016 年,他获美国麻省州长及波士顿市长颁发感谢状,以表扬他对本地文化艺术的大力支持。
多年来,郭氏以独奏家身份经常与世界众多国家、地区管弦乐团及民乐团合作;首演了《唤风》《痕迹之四》《大漠长河》等许多现代风格唢吶协奏曲。出版有《江河水》《郭雅志的吹管世界》《听鸟》等十多张个人专辑。 CCTV曾专题报导: 香江人物郭雅志“唢吶也时尚”。 2016年,香港电台穿越中美两地,为他制作了专访纪录片《大师》。日内瓦论坛评论:“他是舞台上的焦点,令人印象深刻”更被波士顿电台称为「中国的刘易斯.阿姆斯特朗」。

About the Art Director and Wind Instrumentalist:
Yazhi Guo was born in 1966 in Shanxi. He is an artist of the suona and various other wind instruments, is active in concert performances around the world, and is known in China as the “greatest suona player”.
In 1990, Mr. Guo graduated from the China Central Conservatory of Music, where afterwards he stayed to take on lecturing duties. In 1999 he was appointed as Head Suona of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, during which time he also taught at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and acted as the first Director of the Hong Kong Suona Association. In 2012, he relocated to Boston, where he studied jazz at Berklee College of Music. After completing his degree in 2015, the following year he led Planet Micro Jam Institute, an improvisational band from Berklee, as they engaged in cross-cultural exchange between the United States and China.
The “moving reed” component of the suona, invented by Mr. Guo, received the Second-Tier Scientific Progress Award from the Chinese Ministry of Culture, and allowed the traditional suona to undergo a significant breakthrough in its abilities to alter modes and change sounds at any time during live performances. In 1998 Mr. Guo received the internationally renowned Pro Musicis award from Carnegie Hall, a remarkable achievement in Chinese music circles, and was described by The China Press as having, “made an important step in bringing Chinese folk wind music to the world”. In July of the same year he was recognized as one of the top musicians in China, and gave a performance at the gala held for President Clinton’s first visit to China, which was very well received. In 2013, Mr. Guo received the 2012 Hong Kong Annual Most Outstanding Artist Award (Music), and USA Confucius Institute’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Promotion of Chinese Culture. In 2016, he was offered a certificate of thanks by the State of Massachusetts and City of Boston, to commend him for his great support of arts and culture there.
Over the years, Mr. Guo has collaborated as a soloist with orchestras and folk ensembles from around the world. He has premiered many modern-style suona concertos, such as Summoning the Wind, Vestiges, and Desert River, and has released more than 10 solo albums, including River Waters, The Wind World of Yazhi Guo, and The Song of Birds. CCTV has featured Mr. Guo in a special report, commenting that he has “made the suona stylish”. In 2016, Radio Television Hong Kong traveled between China and the US to produce a special documentary on Mr. Guo, called Master. Critics in Geneva have said that, “He is the focus of the stage, leaving audiences with a deep and lasting impression”, and has been hailed by Boston Radio as “China’s Louis Armstrong”.
