LIVE PHILOSOPHY

Hi, I’m Kai, I am a 27-year-old musician, writer, athlete & thinker. Born to a Chinese mother and a German father, I’ve been exposed to different cultures, and to music for as long as, no, even before I could remember. My father, a semiprofessional bass player, sang lullabies to me when I was still in my mother’s womb. At the age of 5, I began to play the drums, a little later the piano, then guitar and bass. At 15, I started writing songs. At 18, I discovered rap as an art form for myself. That’s also when I began studying philosophy at university. My main musical influences are jazz, folk & hip hop. Philosophically, I’m focused on matters of knowledge and justice. I’m also passionate about sports, particularly basketball, and health – not only physical, but also mental and spiritual. Music is movement, medicine and food for body and soul – that’s why I pour so much passion into it.

Live Philosophy is a label – it serves as the umbrella under which I pursue my musical activities. It is also a motto: it asks one to not only read and write, but also live philosophy. For me, that means not only to practice what you preach, but to realize that you learn by doing, by and through living.

In this album which was recorded in Feb 23rd 2019, I share with you seven of my compositions, plus one by the great Cui Jian, who has graciously allowed us to publish our cover of his beautiful “Lost Seasons”. I am grateful that I was able perform this concert accompanied by my father Martin, the fantastic American singer Stephanie and some of Guangzhou’s finest jazz musicians – Bruce, Hugo and Carry. That it was recorded live with a wonderful audience at Guangzhou’s JZ Club makes it that much sweeter. Missing that evening, unfortunately, was my younger brother Richie, a talented musician who has shared the stage with me many times. I want to thank my mother Yingchun, JZ Music, Danny and everyone else who was involved in the organization of the concert and the release of this live album. To the listeners: I hope you will enjoy playing this album as much as we did making it. Thank you for your support.
